In 2015, we added a layer to our Artists In Residency competition that specifically awarded residencies to mid to late-career African artists who lived on the continent and its diaspora. The response to this addition was encouraging and affirmed the need to cater to this group of artists. As a result, five artists have since completed residencies at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in Italy.
We are glad to present the shortlist for the 2016 competition. These fifteen exceptional artists were selected from over 120 applicants from various countries across the continent and beyond. They are:
